Fast Five Porsche 996 GT3 RS

I've been concentrating on all cars from Fast Five lately and I remember this Porsche from a brief scene where Brian and Dom are trying to find cars to beat the police department security system. In a Hot Wheels bin I found a Porsche GT3 RS, but after really studying it and photos of the real car(s) they used, I realized it wasn't quite the same thing. Turns out the production crew modified some earlier model cars with a spoiler and decal package, so I effectively had to do the same thing to replicate them!

After some research I found the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars from around 2000 which had the right body with the side skirts, but the interior was all wrong as well as the spoiler. I substituted the interior with ones from both Matchbox and Hot Wheels GT3 RS cars, which were about 98% the same. I found this interesting since both are made by Mattel. I sanded down the body mold lines and added side mirrors and the little black things near the license plate, but otherwise it's pretty stock. One odd thing was a couple of them had 2 gas filler caps, obviously some running production change. I didn't even notice it til they were all being packaged, so oh well.

Every picture of the car I found online looked dramatically different between sun and shade. The blue paint was quite a challenge to match with off-the-shelf rattle cans, so I sourced some real Mexico Blue automotive paint. Really an amazing color!

There were a lot of decals to apply and details to paint, but in the end it was totally worth it!
